Andrew Mason

Since being admitted to the Faculty of Advocates Andrew Mason has principally been instructed in criminal matters, with a particular emphasis on appellate work. He has been involved in a number of significant decisions involving criminal matters in recent years, including a recent challenge to the Convention compliance of section 23D of the 1995 Act (bail).

Prior to calling to the bar Andrew trained with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in Edinburgh and worked latterly in Glasgow. He is one of a handful of Advocates to have been awarded a coveted Faculty of Advocates Scholarship.

Andrew Mason accepts instructions in all litigation matters, no matter how complex or novel. He is particularly interested in all areas of criminal work, including Extradition, Health & Safety Prosecutions and Human Rights.

Crown appeal against acquittal by stated case, prosecution of Procurator Fiscal Depute. Counsel for the defence. Crown appeal refused.
HMA v. Edward Flaherty (2008)
Murder/culpable homicide, killing of wife, accused with advanced dementia. Junior counsel for the defence.
Kerry Anne Howes v. Lord Advocate (2009, unreported)
Extradition of mother of five children to the United States of America on alleged drugs charges, section 91 of the Extradition Act 2003.
MM v. HMA [2009] HCJ 3
Bail appeals, exceptional circumstances, devolution minutes, convention compliance of section 23D of the 1995 Act (bail). Counsel for the defence. Bail granted.
Seyed Naghibzadeh v. HM Advocate 2009 SCCR 121 –
Admissibility of evidence, intimidation of defence witness. Counsel for the appellant. Conviction quashed.
