Mark was a solicitor eight years, working in the litigation department of a large local authority. After calling to the Bar in 2011 he had a civil practice, principally in the fields of professional negligence, property and administrative law. He regularly appeared for the UK government in judicial review proceedings in the field of immigration.
In 2020 Mark was appointed a full time Advocate Depute. He was appointed as Senior Crown Counsel in 2022 before taking silk the following year. During his time in Crown Office, Mark conducted trials for murder, culpable homicide, attempted murder, drug trafficking, firearms offences, causing death by dangerous driving, bribery and rape. He appeared for the Crown in the Appeal Court in substantive appeals against conviction and Crown appeals against sentence. He was also one of the panel of Advocates Depute who were responsible for Health and Safety prosecutions.

HM Advocate v David Livingstone (2025). Murder case in highly unusual circumstances where the accused fatally assaulted the deceased in the course of an apparent suicide attempt.
HM Advocate v Steven Greig (2025). Double jeopardy murder case where deceased died one year after the accused was convicted of assault.
HM Advocate v SW (2023). Examination of facts in circumstantial murder case where pathologists could not determine the cause of death.
HM Advocate v Stuart Dunsmore (2023). Murder case in which self defence was a live issue.
HM Advocate v McGowan and Rankine (2023). Prosecution under the Bribery Act 2010 in relation to contracts for local authority road repairs.
Lamont v HM Advocate [2025] HCJAC 39. Appeal against conviction for rape and domestic abuse on the basis of misdirection on mutual corroboration.
HM Advocate v Gallagher 2025 JC 321. Crown appeal against unduly lenient sentence following conviction for armed robbery – whether an extended sentence should have been imposed.
Brown v Rea 2025 SC (SAC) 63. Crown appeal on a point of law in relation to the interpretation of sec 210ZA of the 1995 Act.
